(Assuming, of course, Super-Articulation does appear in the Motif ES successor.)> I think it's a given that the Super Articulation Voices will show up in the Motif ES successor. certainly it's common knowledge that the Motif ES technology comes from the Tyros (and the Motif ES has as of yet to catch uo the technology in the Tyros 2)This is all true, but some of the 'technology' (MegaVoices, Super-Articulation) doesn't really have so much to with arranger technology per se, it's just made it into the Tyros line before the production workstations. (Bad live performers will probably be bad regardless of the tools-if it's not an arranger it's a bad performance with a backing CD, if it's not a backing CD then it's a bad live performance with a bad band. Now, personally I think without a lot of care arrangers are going to sound 'bad' for live playing, and certainly few or no players will put in the effort to ensure the end result is energetic, but if we can recall the 'guy whose teeth got knocked out' video, does it really matter who or what is playing to a bunch of drunk Germans (?) in a military-beat Schlager party?

Naturally, this type of songwriter will collaborate with others with the strengths they lack, perhaps working out better chords, arrangement, and 'all around producer,' session musicians or band will be used for the final recording, etc.ģ) You want to get up to professional standards for doing full productions, but you've only really just started out and the arranger enables you to learn all the chords, the idea of going from a chord symbol to a full arrangement, and the difference between various styles of music. With all the styles on board you can gain some idea of how the final production might sound and maybe put together an early demo. Or is should someone have 10 years of classical training first, or is just having some fun at home utterly immoral?Ģ) You are a songwriter who lacks great chops and maybe isn't all that great with chords either, but very good at melody and lyric writing. The mid-to-high-end arrangers have lots of pro-level sounds and great styles available right there, so there you go with left hand chord triggering, some right hand playing and singing complete with vocal harmony. Well, let's start thinking of a few positive uses of an arranger:ġ) You are a home keyboard player who just wants to have fun. Having said that, what they show is that getting an arranger working well for a live performance is a lot of work, and perhaps constrained by the available styles. Some of his other videos are quite impressive, actually sometimes almost unbelievable. IIRC he only has one song to play on that one and otherwise he just goes through some of the styles and 'Super Articulation' voices. Unfortunately the Tyros 2 video is probably the *least* impressive of the Yamaha arranger video demos-I'm assuming you saw the same one as that on the Yamaha Europe site with Michel Voncken doing the demo. If I ever find myself in a nursing home with limited digital dexterity (referring my own digits, of course), I would consider buying one since by that time anyone whose opinion I respect would probably be long dead.

It actually made me feel a little sad after sitting through the entire DVD. I sat there only slightly amazed at the technology but it did not give me any real joy to know that this technology exists. I watched the entire demo to include the CLP Clavinova presentation. I received a DVD demo along with a subscription to a British keyboard magazine. does the Sun City mega-retirement community near me count? Maybe it's more than our preconceptions about arrangers that have progressed.

I had to stop and think about whether I play in nursing homes with my arranger. It requires it's own set of skills to use properly and I think most professional keyboardists would be surprised at how sophisticated this technology has become.

I use an arranger right now (a Yamaha 9000 Pro - I own two) and find it to be a great songwriting and improvisational tool both on stage and in the studio. We all may be playing arrangers in the next decade. I'll bet we see more, not less, arranger technology in high-end workstations in the future. certainly it's common knowledge that the Motif ES technology comes from the Tyros (and the Motif ES has as of yet to catch uo the technology in the Tyros 2), the OASYS incorporates KARMA which is also advanced arranger technology. On their Arranger Workstation website, Yamaha boasts some popular artists who use their arrangers like the Tyros, including songwriters like Paul Williams.
